Advocacy is problem solving with a heart. We problem solve every day to deal with life’s challenges. When a family member is sick or needs help we are there for them. Helping older adults is more of the same, but their issues are not the same. The challenges we face in taking care of our older loved ones can range from trouble putting on socks to serious falls or memory issues. We want what is best for our loved ones and work hard to make sure that they are taken care of. Here are three tips to keep in mind when advocating for an older adult:
- Be patient. The issues that we face often entail huge life change for the older adult. Be willing to open your mind to their world and what is really important to them.
- Get professional help. Navigating all of the ins and outs of senior care can be really complicated. Part of my job as an advocate is to ask all the right questions and help the family make those difficult decisions. Geriatric Care Managers can also provide much needed oversight.
- Watch yourself for burnout. Taking care of an adult parent can be an emotional and stressful issue. Take time for yourself; find a friend or a professional to help you out with things like care conferences to take the pressure off.
