I am a Baby Boomer who witnessed the societal changes that have occurred over the decades as a result of a large group of people who were not happy with the status quo. Baby Boomers were known for their rebelliousness, but why is it that many of us who are currently caring for our older adult parents are not screaming at the top of our lungs in an attempt to get everyone to listen to our horror concerning the difficult, complex and overwhelming life that the senior citizens in our country are expected to navigate. The concerns are not only about the healthcare system, but the decision to stay at home or opt for senior living. How are they supposed to learn to deal with “online” only access to information? Don’t get me started on the management of paperwork that is expected of all citizens, let alone our seniors. Whether it is scheduling a doctor’s appointment, filling out medical paperwork, dealing with finances and investments, communicating with professionals, dealing with contractors, filing taxes, planning a trip, moving, paying bills or figuring out if the mail is important or junk, it is evident that life in America is so complex that the stress level is through the roof.
As Baby Boomers, we fought the system and caused social change, but what happened? Did we run out of steam, did we get distracted or do we just not care anymore? I refuse to believe that any of these could be true. It is time for the most important movement in our lives. It is time to return our elders to their rightful position of national treasurers. It is time for Baby Boomers to unite, rise up and say, “We are not going to take it anymore!” We will not allow the older adults in this country to exist in a state of worry, frustration, and helplessness. We will be sure that older adults live out their lives feeling respected, cared for, protected and able to enjoy each day.
I am not going to stand for it anymore and you shouldn’t either! Please join me in starting a “Boomers Treasuring Seniors” movement by first spreading the word using social media – Like, Share, Post and use any other method to get this movement moving. Thank you.
Rebelliously,
Judy Rough
