When you’re in the senior placement business you soon become aware of the challenges for older adults with some form of mental health. There are only a handful of Assisted Living communities or board and care homes that specifically care for this population in the state of Colorado. Of those places they are usually court appointed medicaid patients and usually on the younger side of life.
We have had a few successful placements for mental health clients in small board and care homes where their meds can be monitored. Sometimes the med administration, which is included in A.L., is what they need to be safe. Some people need little activities of daily living help but, rather, just the one on one attention and compassion. It’s actually really cool to watch the bond develop between the client and the caregiving staff to a place of quality life.
It’s great to see them back out in the community, walking and enjoying life. They come back to a place they know is good.
Assisted living for people with mental health, if manageable, will range in price from $3500-$5000. I wish that there were more places for the less fortunate.
