After spending all your life dealing with all the hustle and bustle, a point comes when you just want to wind down and stay with family. However, there are many homes which don’t settle well for older adults. Even for an adult living alone, not taking precautions can result in accidents which can sometimes become fatal.
Having a comfortable environment for your elders is a responsibility. Making sure there is no way in which harm may come to them is a priority. We have to make our home as happy, healthy and safe as can be. There are several ways in which we can make homes friendlier to older adults.
Create a safe place
The first thing every person should know is that, by paying a little attention, we can save ourselves from many incidents which could cause harm. Making sure that all alarms in the house have fresh batteries, covering the corners of floor rugs to prevent them from folding, attaching wires to a safe corner to prevent anyone from tripping, are just the basic precautions which should not only be followed in homes with older adults but in every other home as well.
Prevent accidents
There are several ways in which we can prevent ourselves from accidents by taking care of a few details in our home.
- Buy an anti-slip mat for the bathroom to prevent falling.
- Install handrails on the sides of the stairs to make walking the stairs easier.
- Add automated lighting to light up the room as soon as you enter.
- Install handrails in the bathroom, on the sides of tubs, etc, for better grip.
- Store crockery in reachable cabinets.
- Keep medication in proper boxes to avoid misplacing them.
- Keep sharp knives and utensils in a secured drawer.
